St. Patricks Church

  San Francisco, California

The multi-story, unreinforced brick bell tower of this church was seriously damaged during the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. The object of this project was to repair and strengthen the lower portion of the damaged tower. This was accomplished by adding eccentric braced steel frames along the two sides of the tower and a stiff steel moment frame over the entry. The design was complicated by the need to make the new frames as unobtrusive as possible.
$300,000 construction cost.
